Jacks Dods was a radio operator and gunner on a variety of aircraft during the Second World War. A Veteran of D-Day, Jack now lives at The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre in Ottawa. In the art studio, through his paintbrush, he shares his stories and memories. On the back of each painting he adds his reflections.
In the lead up to the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, Jack has generously granted us the right to use one of his paintings to pay tribute to all those who served and sacrificed on June 6, 1944.
Below is the story on the back of the painting:
Rides Aboard Submarines
"During the Summer of 1943, while stationed at Gibraltar, arrangements were made to have the aircrews of RAF 233 Squadron, flying Hudsons to go on the training trips in two submarines, 'Surf' and 'Truclant' and for some of their crews to come on real operational flights in our aircraft and also on training flights with their submarines. This was unusual but very productive.
This drawing is an attempt to show a training flight by our crew with 'Surf'."
